Before many of us ever knew what Hoodoo was, we were told what to think about it.
Evil. Witchcraft. Dangerous. Demonic. Something our families should stay away from.
But who taught us that?
And perhaps the more important question is:
What did our ancestors know that we were taught to forget?
Queen City Academy of Spiritual Arts invites you to our inaugural forum, Why Do We Think Hoodoo Is Evil?
This intimate, culturally centered conversation will examine Hoodoo beyond the stereotypes, fear, movies, social media, and misinformation that have shaped the way generations of African Americans have viewed one of our own spiritual traditions.
We are going to ask questions that aren't always comfortable—but deserve to be asked.
DURING THIS FORUM, WE WILL EXPLORE:
• What Hoodoo is—and what it is not
• The African American history and cultural roots of Hoodoo
• How slavery and the suppression of African traditions affected spiritual practices
• Christianity, the Black Church, and the complicated relationship many families developed with ancestral traditions
• Why African-derived spiritual practices were often characterized as evil or dangerous
• How Hollywood, television, social media, and popular culture continue to influence what we believe
• Why some people are questioning the religious traditions they inherited
• The difference between learning about Hoodoo and practicing Hoodoo
• Ancestral knowledge, cultural memory, and what it means to reclaim our history responsibly
Most importantly, you will be encouraged to examine a simple question:
WHO TAUGHT YOU WHAT TO BELIEVE?
This forum is not designed to convert you, tell you what religion to follow, or convince you to practice Hoodoo.
It is designed to encourage you to think, research, question, and understand.
You may leave with answers.
You may leave with more questions.

THIS IS A CLOSED FORUM
Because conversations surrounding race, religion, family, ancestry, and spirituality can be deeply personal, this is not an open public event.
The forum has been intentionally created as a culturally centered space focused on the African American experience, African American history, and Hoodoo as an African American spiritual tradition.
Attendance requires an application.
Applicants will be asked to provide basic contact information, tell us why they would like to attend, and provide an active social media profile as part of our applicant verification process.
Submitting an application does not guarantee admission.
HOW REGISTRATION WORKS
STEP 1 — APPLY
Complete the private forum application.
STEP 2 — APPLICATION REVIEW
Applications will be reviewed by Queen City Academy of Spiritual Arts.
STEP 3 — ACCEPTANCE
Approved applicants will receive an acceptance email containing registration instructions.
STEP 4 — COMPLETE REGISTRATION
Upon acceptance, you will receive your $25 registration invoice.
Your seat is confirmed once payment has been received.
STEP 5 — RECEIVE THE PRIVATE LOCATION
The exact Charlotte-area forum location will be provided directly to accepted and registered participants.
For the privacy of our participants, the location will not be publicly posted.
